Who: Rick Wakeman Why: Because he's awesome! Because he is the most retro yet innovative keyboardist to have ever graced rock n roll, in the sense that he incorporates technical and virtuosic classical elements into his style of playing--a la the greats (Bach, Mozart, Brahms (see: Wakeman's tribut to Brahms on Yes' "Fragile," 1971), etc.)--and combines it with cutting-edge sounds and technology. Rick is the face of prog-rock and is the one to have popularized Moog synths in rock/pop music. I love that 40 years later, now in the age of digital music and simple stage set-ups, Rick continues to surround himself with a wall of keyboards and vintage analog synths. He truly knows what's cool!

A little rock trivia for ya...

It is pretty well-known that Eddie Van Halen played on the Michael Jackson song "Beat It." But, what most people don't know is that Eddie only played the guitar solo on the track. It was Steve Lukather, of Toto fame, who actually played on all other parts of the recording. Steve was also the guitarist on "The Girl is Mine" and "Human Nature" (which was written by Toto member Steve Porcaro).

I went to an antique store the other day and found this treasure: a tool box full of 8 track tapes. No, I do not own a working 8-track player, but heck, they're still cool to have! This is the most eclectic collection I have ever seen: Willie Nelson, polka compilations, cocktail piano pieces, the "Deliverance" soundtrack, Jackson 5, Kiss' "Love Gun," and more. Good stuff!

Oh mannnnn, this is such an AWESOME book! Bill Bruford, of Yes (and the godfather of prog-rock drumming), provides a wonderful forward to the book, describing prog-rock as a subject for doctoral theses and learned discussion as well as a product of counterculture and major technological innovation. The author, Will Romanao, illustrates detailed histories of notable prog-rock bands, such as: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Rush, Gentle Giant, and others, while also highlighting sub-categories like Prog-Folk, German-Prog, and Italian-Prog. I picked up some really sweet Strawbs albums at the record store today. Great albums--I highly recommend checking out "Burning for you." True, it doesn't feature their classic lineup w/ Rick Wakeman, but it has a great sound and nice vocals. Very early Genesis/ELP-ish. Good stuff, peeps!

Take a Walk on the Dark Side: Rock and roll myths, legends, and curses (by R. Gary Patterson)
Including chapters entitled "Mr. Crowley," "Waiting at the Crossroads," "Welcome to the Hotel California," and others, Patterson's book covers the tales and ironies that have cursed rock 'n' roll and its icons. Patterson also reveals the mysteries behind hidden messages in songs you've always wondered about.

Classic Rock Stories (by Tim Morse)
A great collection of stories, memories, recollections, and opinions of some of the most beloved rock stars.

Here are some things I learned from reading this book (more useless knowledge--just what I need):

"Dust in the Wind" wasn't supposed to be a song. It's original form was actually a finger-picking exercise that Kerry Livgren was working on. In fact, Kerry fought with the rest of the members of Kansas over doing the song. "This is not us," he would keep saying.
Keith Emerson thought his Moog synth solo in "Lucky Man" was "shit." It was completely improvised, and the rough version ended up making the cut.
The song "Bad Company" by Bad Company was recorded at night in a field in one take.
Elton John and Bernie Taupin have no idea what "Take Me to the Pilot" is about. It's all just a bunch of jibberish.

William Miller (from Almost Famous). I imagine we would have been best friends growing up. We would have exchanged music and records and have had intense discussions about rock 'n' roll over cups of coffee. He would have taken me backstage to shows on occasion and introduced me to some of the hippest, coolest rock stars on the scene that he was interviewing.

Riff Randall (from Rock 'N' Roll High School). Riff would have been my rock 'n' roll partner-in-crime in high school. We would have attended every rock concert we could possibly manage together. We would wear matching shiny outfits, pigtails in our hair, and run around shouting "gabba gabba hey!"

Jam (from Detroit Rock City). Jam would have been another one of my closest chums. After school, I'd go watch him practice and rock out on his drums and then talk endlessly about the amazingness of KISS.

The Spinal Tap guys. Who wouldn't want hang out with Spinal Tap, the coolest, wildest rock band on the planet!?

Neon Angel: A memoir of a Runaway (the Cherie Currie autobiography)

This was by far one of the best and most entertaining autobiographies I have read. I really enjoyed how Cherie portrayed her recollections of experiences and memories through vivid and detailed descriptions of the senses. The frequent use of dialogue was compelling. Whether or not one is a Runaways/Cherie Currie/Joan Jett fan, readers will certainly enjoy being taken back to their teenage years, as Cherie reminisces about her moments as a young dreamer and rock 'n' roll, David Bowie-obsessed teenager. "I'm your ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-CHERRY BOMB!"

Back to the Garden: The story of Woodstock (by Pete Forntatale)

"On the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock, renowned New York City disc jockey Pete Fornatale brings the iconic rock concert to vivid life through original interviews with Roger Daltrey, Joan Baez, David Crosby, Richie Havens, Joe Cocker, and dozens of headliners, organizers, and fans." I am only about a fourth of the way into the book, but I've been loving it. I enjoy reading the various tales and recollections about peoples' experiences related to the Woodstock festival. Most interesting are the emotions revealed by the musicians and the eerie, unified natural power that overcame them during their performances. These are truly tales of peace and love and an almost supernatural chance of bringing people together.

NYE 2009: Kansas & Night Ranger

I went to see Kansas and Night Ranger play at the Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, Minnesota on New Years Eve. Both bands put on such great shows! I'm continuously blown away by Steve Walsh's voice and keyboard skills. I truly believe he is one of the most underappreciated musicians. "Icarus Borne on Wings of Steel" was definitely the highlight for me. It was a blast seeing Night Ranger again too. Jack Blades and Brad Gillis are just as energetic and bubbly as ever! Highlights were "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and "When You Close Your Eyes." Cheers to a happy new year!

If you are able, I suggest looking into a copy of the album that includes the bonus tracks so that you can hear Jon Anderson's accapella piece "Days." Beautiful.

Not the best Yes album, but for any Yes fan, it's a must! You can definitely hear the link between their early progressive sound and their later poppish stuff in this album. Yay for Yes!
